10 Tips for Travelling to Morocco

Thinking of travelling to Morocco for the first time? Morocco is a country full of contrasts, flavours, colours and landscapes, from the lively streets of Marrakech to the Atlas mountains and the dunes of the Merzouga desert. Before you pack, these 10 tips for travelling to Morocco will help you enjoy your trip much more.

1. Let Morocco surprise you

Our first tip is simple: travel with an open mind. Morocco may be different from what you are used to. Its streets, markets, sounds, smells, food and customs are part of a very different culture, and that is exactly what makes it so interesting. Do not compare everything with home: enjoy the differences, observe, ask questions and let yourself be surprised.

2. Plan your trip in advance

Before you travel, sort out the basics: documents, accommodation, transport, travel insurance and the route you want to follow. Morocco has so much to offer that it is tempting to see everything in one trip, so choose a route that lets you enjoy it without rushing. If you want to see Marrakech and the desert, for example, you can combine city, mountains, traditional villages and the Sahara.

3. Bring comfortable clothes and shoes

You will walk a lot in Morocco. Between medinas, souks, excursions and cultural visits, comfortable shoes will be one of your best travel companions. Bring light, comfortable clothes, and remember that temperatures vary by region and season. If you are going to the desert, bring something to protect you from the sun and wind.

4. Be ready for different temperatures

Morocco has a great variety of landscapes and climates. Temperatures can change a lot between cities, mountains and the desert, and nights can be much colder than days. That is why we recommend layers and a warm jacket, especially if you are spending a night in the desert.

5. Try Moroccan food

One of the best ways to get to know a country is through its food. Try traditional dishes such as tagine, couscous, harira, brochettes, Moroccan salads and the famous mint tea. Do not be afraid to try new things: sharing meals is also one of the best ways to bond when travelling in a group.

6. Respect local culture and customs

Morocco has a rich culture and traditions that are part of everyday life. As a traveller, show respect for local customs, especially when visiting religious sites or traditional communities. A respectful attitude and an open mind will make your experience much more pleasant.

7. Carry some cash

Although you can pay by card in many places, it is a good idea to carry some cash for small expenses. In markets, small shops and places outside the big cities, cash is often more practical, as it is for tips and small purchases.

8. Do not miss the Merzouga desert

If you have the chance, a night in the Merzouga desert is well worth including in your trip. The Erg Chebbi dunes offer stunning landscapes: a camel ride, the sunset, a night in a camp and the sunrise over the dunes. On a shared desert tour you share all of it with people you have just met.

9. Travelling in a group can make it even better

Want to go to Morocco but have no one to go with? You do not have to give up the trip. Travelling in a group lets you discover the country with company and meet new people along the way. You can arrive knowing no one and leave with new friends. Read more about travelling solo in Morocco with a group.

10. Enjoy and disconnect

The last tip is probably the most important: do not try to control everything. Leave room for improvisation, enjoy the landscapes, talk to people, try new flavours and take time simply to enjoy the moment. Morocco is a destination to experience with all five senses.
