Rutas compartidas al desierto de Marruecos: dunas de Merzouga

What to Pack for the Merzouga Desert: Your Checklist

Sleeping in the Erg Chebbi dunes is one of the highlights of a trip to Morocco. To enjoy it without being cold, too hot or getting sand in your eyes, you just need to pack well. This is the list we give to everyone who travels with us to the Merzouga desert.

The weather in Merzouga by season

The desert has big temperature swings between day and night. In December and January highs are around 18 °C and nights drop to about 4–5 °C. In July and August daytime temperatures go above 40 °C and nights stay hot. The best times to go are spring (March and April) and autumn (October and November).

Clothes for the desert

  • Light long trousers and breathable tops, ideally long-sleeved to protect you from the sun.
  • A fleece or warm jacket for the night and sunrise, essential from October to April.
  • A large scarf or turban (cheche) for your head and face: it protects you from the sun and windblown sand. You can also buy one there.
  • Comfortable clothes for the dromedary ride that do not rub your legs.
  • Warm pyjamas if you travel in winter.

Shoes

Walking on the dunes is easiest barefoot or in sandals when the sand is not too hot. For the rest of the trip, wear comfortable trainers you do not mind filling with sand.

Protection and health

  • Sunglasses and high-factor sunscreen, even in winter.
  • Lip balm and moisturiser: the desert air is very dry.
  • A small first-aid kit with your usual medication, something for motion sickness (there are many bends in the Atlas) and for your stomach.
  • Wet wipes and hand sanitiser.
  • A reusable water bottle.

For the night at the camp

  • A head torch or your phone torch to move around the camp.
  • A power bank for your phone and camera: there are not always sockets (the luxury camp has electricity).
  • A small backpack for the night in the dunes. Your big suitcase usually stays in the vehicle or at the hotel.
  • A plastic bag or cover to protect your camera from sand.

Documents and money

Always carry your passport and some cash in dirhams for drinks, tips and souvenirs: there are no ATMs in the desert. If it is your first trip, also read our 10 tips for travelling to Morocco and, if you are a woman travelling alone, our guide to solo female travel in Morocco.

What you do not need to bring

You do not need a tent, sleeping bag or food: on our tours the camp includes the tent, blankets, dinner and breakfast. You do not need expensive technical clothing either; comfortable layers are enough.
